Interpreter Releases began publication in 1923 under the auspices of the Foreign Language and Information Service, which later became the Common Council for American Unity and, eventually, the American Council for Nationalities Services. It contained information on immigration law, quotas, immigrant services, and more, and was provided to social workers, service organizations, and libraries, among others. Recently, the publication was purchased by Federal Publications Inc. and is still being published by that company.

The American Council for Nationalities Services had its origins during World War I in the United States Committee on Public Information, Division of Work with the Foreign Born. After several brief nongovernmental affiliations, the Division became independent in 1921 as the Foreign Language Information Service (FLIS).
